Working Group Ethics (WGE)

The Working Group Ethics (WGE) provides a space to discuss ethical questions — kept as distinct from legal questions as possible — that arise in various NFDI consortia, and to develop useful knowledge and guidelines to help address these questions.

The WGE holds general sessions every two months as well as regular study group meetings. Study groups consist of WGE members who collaborate on a specific topic. Currently there are three active study groups:

  • Study Group Dark Data — addresses data that exists but is not actively used or published
  • Study Group CARE Principles — focuses on the Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics framework for indigenous data governance
  • Study Group AI Ethics — examines ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence in research data contexts

Participation in the WGE and its study groups is open to all NFDI members, regardless of background or affiliation with a consortium or section. Members of the German scientific and research community who do not belong to an NFDI-affiliated institution are also welcome. Sessions are held in English.
